The Re-use of the former Malden Hospital
Status
Hallmark Health System reacquired the former Malden Hospital site at the end of May. The site had been purchased three years ago by Deaconess Abundant Life Communities, who planned to re-develop the area into a senior living community called “Parkview on the Fells.”
Unfortunately the project fell victim to the tough economy and could not secure the necessary funding to move forward with construction, despite support from the community and successful pre-sale numbers.
Hallmark Health has not made any decisions on the future of the former Malden Hospital at this time, but still believes assisted living for area seniors is the best fit for the site as well as for the community. Hallmark Health is disappointed the “Parkview on the Fells” project could not move forward as planned, as it would have been a great use of the site and an important addition to the city of Malden.
Hallmark Health is actively looking for a buyer for the property and has a number of feelers out to developers both in the state and across the country. It could take up to a year before any final decisions are made on the future of the property.
The former Malden Hospital is located at 100 Hospital Road in Malden, near t
he Medford line.
Hallmark Health Facilities Department makes regular trips around the former hospital property and disposes of items like these that are illegally dumped on the property.
Issues Being Addressed
Mayor Richard Howard, Councilor Paul DiPietro and Michael Sack, president and CEO of Hallmark Health, recently held a public meeting to give area residents a chance to listen, ask questions and voice concerns about the future of the former Malden Hospital. Similar meetings will be held on an ongoing basis to keep the public apprised of any developments at the site. The next meeting will be held this fall, date TBD.
Staff from the Hallmark Health Properties Department is making twice weekly tours of the grounds and abutting perimeter space including along the sidewalks and non-sidewalk areas. Trash and other discarded materials have been and will continue to be removed. A guard house staffed by a security officer has also been put in place.
Hallmark Health also hired a landscaper who trimmed the grass and shrubs around the main entrance area and weeded along Hospital Road. The landscaper also trimmed branches, weeded and removed trash along several streets that abut the property including West Border Road, Murray Hill Road and Grover Road.

Hallmark Health will continue to monitor and maintain the former Malden Hospital property.
Use of the site
The former Malden Hospital was used by a movie crew from 20th Century Fox In October as a base camp as they are shooting scenes in the area.
In addition to the movie crew, Hallmark Health has also allowed the Massachusetts State Police to use the site for training.
